The Rafiki Program
Rafiki is a Swahili word that means Friend. Project Africa aims to promote gender Equality, Equity and Empowerment of rural women and girls through global cross-cultural friendships.
In a simple but unique letter writing program, Project Africa finds friends from all over the world for the women in our network. The paired Rafiki exchange letters and by so doing, they encourage women and girls in rural Africa learn how to read and write.
One of the reasons why rural women do not participate actively in adult education, is the fact that most study material are bulky with informations that disinterests them. However, whenever a woman in Project Africa receives a letter she gets a chance to read about real peopleand their experiences. And when she replies a letter she gets an opportunity to write and talk about herself, her family her environment and daily life schedules.
Rafiki Clubs are established in all the villages where Project Africa has programs. Rafiki Classes of Adult education have at least 10 women in every session.
This unique program also gives Rafiki abroad an opportunity to celebrate diversity by learning new cultures and the experiences of women all across the board.
With Rafiki Program every one has a chance to contribute towards fighting illiteracy amongst rural women and girls. And, we can all monitor the progress the women and girls are making in gaining a skill in basic and functional literacy.
Rafiki empowers women to voice their opinions and make decisions concerning women and global issues. It involves the marginalised rural women who for a long time have been cut off from education, information and knowledge of mainstream media. |
